About the Sprout Rack

Red Oak Leaf Lettuce

In today’s busy world, the idea of growing your own food has become a fantasy or something only people with a huge yard or farm can do. Obviously not something someone with an average size yard, or an apartment could possibly do. Especially not something someone with a limited budget or time can do right?

What if I told you that you don’t need a yard, a lot of money, or to spend hours a day weeding. You also don’t need expensive lights, designer soil, or a huge investment in hydroponics. Seeds want to grow, and all it takes is water, nutrients, and light. Before you know it, you can supplement your diet with garden-fresh produce picked right when you need it. Yes, I know that is oversimplified, if you are growing outdoors, and sometimes indoors, there are insects, rodents, weather, and sometimes deer to contend with, but the basics are water, nutrients, and light.

I am lucky enough to have a yard. Not a big one (although I hope to get there one day) just an average yard with dedicated garden space. But I don’t need a yard to grow fresh produce all year. I even had a salad harvested fresh from my garden in the middle of the winter thanks to an old pie rack I got for free, which is my sprout rack, and some lights I got for Christmas.

The goal of The Sprout Rack is to help those with limited space and limited resources to have healthy and fresh food all year. Regardless of the amount of space you have or your financial situation I want to help you grow food. I plan to experiment with different lighting, soil, simple planters you can make from scraps, and just provide some basic information of things I have learned through trial and error.

Welcome, and I hope we can learn together.
